One milestone of 2009 was a student-initiated activity by some budding entrepreneurs from E-club to sell flowers on Valentine’s Day. This event was initiated by William Lim and Tan Zhi Yang, who put into practice what they had learnt about venturing into a business. Their venture comprised sourcing for their own supplies of fresh flowers, arranging for the delivery of their flowers, determining an appropriate pricing and developing an appropriate promotion strategy.
Another notable programme was Ideas in Action, which enabled students and teachers to develop their creative and entrepreneurial ideas through seed funding from Citi Foundation. In collaboration with the Science department, 12 teams from Millennia Institute were nominated and five teams won awards worth $3000, to be used for the development of new ideas.
The students were also privileged to listen to a talk by the Managing Director and Founder of Talentpreneur Hub, Mr Ken Koh, on 2nd April. He shared tips on how ingenious ideas can be realised and developed into viable businesses.
On 13th May, all members attended a training on “How to organise an International Pop Concert” by ACCA. This innovative training programme challenged the students’ technical knowledge and polished their soft skills that are required to be entrepreneurs.
An outdoor field research was conducted in July for members to acquire knowledge on the different types of outlet displays, features of outlet displays which attract customers and different types of promotional strategies used by these outlets. After the field research, a sharing session was conducted by the students.
August saw the teacher-in-charge, Mr Lee Kok Kiang, conduct a talk ‘Investing in Stocks and Shares’. He shared on the fundamentals of investing, such as terms associated with stocks, which stocks to invest in and identifying stockmarket trends.
To add to that, Management of Business teacher Ms K Mada conducted a session on ‘External Business Environment Scanning’. Members were taught how SWOT analysis is conducted. After the presentation, students were tasked to conduct a SWOT analysis of a business they know and present their findings to other group members.
In a learning journey to Alpha Biofuels (S) Pte Ltd on 28th October, PU1 E-club members learnt how Alpha Biofuels convert waste cooking oil into biodiesel via a chemical process. This was a good exposure for students, which helped them to identify potential business ventures and strategies.
