2009 has been an exciting year for the Modern Dance Society. There were ample opportunities for the dancers to put their best foot forward and exhibit their talents.

The year began with intensive preparation for the bi-annual Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging for International Dance. Training of skills specific to the chosen choreography had begun in the previous year, and the initial months saw the dancers undergoing physical conditioning to be in top form by the time of the competition. In the midst of their training,  the dancers found the opportunity to perform for the institute’s Chinese New Year celebrations and the CCA open house.

After more than four months of preparation, our team of 21 dancers presented their unique choreography titled ‘A Glimpse of Microcosmos’ at the University Cultural Centre on 16 April. They did the school proud by garnering a ‘Gold’ award.

The modern dancers were also enthusiastic to be part of the school’s Official Opening ceremony, presenting a modified version of their dance to the guests and VIPs.

The highlight of the year was an invitation from the MOE Co-Curricular Activities Branch to perform for the SYF Dance Presentation, a showcase of 14 of the most excellent and unique entries for this year’s Central Judging for Dance. This was a first for the Modern Dance Society and the gala event on 24 July proved to be a unique and memorable experience for our dancers, as they interacted with fellow dancers from other secondary schools and junior colleges.
