It was a fruitful year for the MALAY CULTURAL SOCIETY of Millennia Institute. Apart from organizing various activities for the members, MCS also embark on organizing major national events collaborating with external organizations, notably Angkatan Sasterawan ’50 (ASAS ’50) a Malay Writers Association. The MCS also took the initiative to adopt the Malay Drama Club of Fuhua Secondary School for the year 2007. The three main events organized by MCS at national level were the 1st National School Malay Scrabble Competition, The Creative Writing Workshop and Awang Belanga … Kononnya.
The 1st National School Malay Scrabble Competition on 17th February 2007 was jointly organized by MCS and Malay Language Unit. Over 270 participants representing over 70 secondary schools in Singapore took part in the competition. The competition was opened to lower and upper secondary students. The Guest-of-Honour for the special event was Mr Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad (Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Education) and MP for GRC Tampines.
The MCS and Malay Language Unit collaborated with Angkatan Sasterawan ‘50 (ASAS ’50) to organize The Creative Writing Workshop on 18th March 2007. Over 80 students representing 40 secondary schools, 18 junior colleges and 1 centralize institute took part. Mr Mohamad Latiff Mohamad (S.E.A Writers Awards and Tun Seri Lanang Award recipient), Mr Abdul Samat Ali (poet), Mr Mohd Pitchay Gani Abdul Aziz (PENAMAS Award recipient and critique writer) and Mr Yazid Hussein (poet and creative writer) were the presenters. Mr Mohd Noh Daipi of AD/CPDD Malay Language and Literature Ministry of Education was the Guest-of-Honour.
The MCS also staged the third edition of the Awang Belanga trilogy entitled Awang Belanga … Kononnya on 18 August 2007. It was a successful performance. The play was penned by Mr Yazid Hussein, Muhammad Shukri and Sri Nabilah Basri. Amirul, Zahidah, Ramdan, Ms Siti Mardiana, Mr Mokhter and Mr Yazid Hussein were responsible for the musics and songs for the play. While Suhana Jumadi and Mr Mokther were in-charge of the choreography for the play. Shariffah Nadhirah and Suhana were the head for the costumes and props. For the play, the MCS collaborated with Malay Drama Club of Fuhua Secondary School and ASAS ’50. Ticket sales which amounted to $500 was donated to Millennia Institute.
Notable achievements by the members of our MCS in 2007 were 1st Runner-up and Most Creative Award in the Pesta Pantun Competition organized by NUS Language Club; and the Best Song Award in the Gema Puisi Artistic 2007 organized by Nanyang Junior College Malay Cultural Society. While Muhammad Bin Parjo won 1st position in Malay Language National Creative Writing Competition (Short Stories) organized by ASAS ’50 with the support of MLLPC Ministry of Education. His short story was entitled ‘Tarian di Neraka’. Seven short stories written by MCS members were published in Purnama Senja, an anthology of short stories by the participants of The Creative Writing Workshop. They were Muhammad Bin Parjo with Tarian Di Neraka, Sri Nabilah Basri with Sendat, Amirul Asri Hussain with Salah Sangka, Nor Diana Amran with Tangisan Seorang Ayah, Rahimah Mohamad with Erti Pengorbanan, Siti Nursyahidah Ideris with Harapan Seorang Ayah, and Nur Fadlinah Syadza with Kasihan Ibu. A short play by the MCS members entitled ‘Gurindam’ won Best Artistic Direction Award at Pentas Budaya 2007 organized by NUS Language Society. While Azian won the Best Actress Award for her role in Gurindam.
In the year 2007 we bid farewell to our teacher advisor, Mr Yazid Hussein who was seconded to Special Training Programme (Mother Tongue) NIE/ NTU. Under his guidance, MCS grew from strength to strength. It was his initiative that MCS and Malay Language Unit embarked on national level projects. We also welcome Madam Norlila Binti Abdul Ghani as our new teacher advisor.
