2009 saw MIAKE make a subtle comeback from its preceding year of tight schedules and jam-packed action. Even so, the ensemble still satiated its craving to perform and entertain by participating in the Institute’s Official Opening Ceremony and competing in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Music Competition.
During the CCA Open House, MIAKE played Coldplay’s Viva La Vida among other pieces to welcome the new PU1 students. The beautiful melodies performed by the ensemble appealed to the audience and drew many newcomers into the AKE family.
Following the influx of fresh recruits at the start of the year, the members got down to serious preparation for two major events – the Millennia Institute Official Opening (MIOO) and the SYF 2009. As usual, the ensemble worked arduously to expand and polish their repertoire. The months prior to the MIOO saw AKE engage in intensive practices, which resulted in a steady improvement in the group’s standards.  In the SYF, MIAKE did the school proud by achieving another Gold Award, maintaining the ensemble’s record in its past four SYFs.
The MIOO was also the perfect platform for the ensemble to market the MIAKE CD that was recorded at the end of 2008. MIAKE did its part in raising funds and donating the CD sales garnered to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
MIAKE ended the year with a music workshop conducted for Concord Primary School to raise the students’ awareness of the Angklung / Kulintang art form. A full-day event comprising team-building activities, master-classes and a combined performance was organised and ran by MIAKE students, much to the delight and satisfaction of their guests.
