Millennia Institute Silat Club embraced 2009 with greater interest and enthusiasm to learn and excel. Not only did our Pesilats learn more about their very own martial art, Silat, they were also able to share their knowledge, understanding and skills with the National University of Singapore (NUS) Muay Thai society. The session, which was conducted in March, offered our Pesilats a golden opportunity of having their very first collaborative Silat-Muay Thai training. It was here that our Pesilats gained greater insights and witnessed for themselves the difference and similarities between the two martial arts. The climax of this MI-NUS collaboration was when MI Pesilats met NUS Muay Thai members in a unique sparring session that displayed the characteristic techniques of each martial art.
In the months leading to June, our Pesilats were heavily involved in intensive physical training in preparation for the annual Inter-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Silat Championship. The year marked the first in which, under the leadership of our Coach, Mr. Abdul Kadir, our Pesilats benefited from personalised (British spelling) weight training programme to improve their endurance level, flexibility and performance. Our Pesilats fought bravely and the results from the IVP Silat Championship hosted by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) were very encouraging. Three of our Pesilats successfully made it to the Qualifying Round, with one advancing further to clinch the Bronze Medal in the Class H Men Match Category.
Activities after the IVP Silat Championship were brought to a halt in light of the H1N1 situation nationwide. However, training resumed in September to prepare our Pesilats for the upcoming events.
Millennia Institute Silat Club looks forward to more collaborative efforts and opportunities for learning beyond the realm of martial arts next year. Our Pesilats strive to continue to persevere and stay committed in its effort towards achieving success in future.
