The Institute's 6-month Strategic Planning process started in July 2006 with an internal scan of the processes and outcomes of the institute for the period 2004-2006. Next we embarked on an external scan of the future environment in which our students will operate in. Finally, we formulated the 4 strategic thrusts that will bring MI closer towards an institute of distinction in the next 5 years.
The 4 strategic thrusts are:
- Impart enduring skills to enable our students to stay relevant and adaptable in a dynamic changing world.
- Develop global citizens with a sense of rootedness to family and Singapore.
- Scale and sustain peaks of excellence.
- Create a stimulating, inviting and conducive learning environment

In the light of a dynamic and interconnected world where new knowledge is created at phenomenal rates, it is not enough for our students to acquire knowledge which becomes outdated quickly. Our students need enduring 21st century skills that will help them stay relevant and keep up with the rapid changes. Enduring skills such as communication skills, higher-order thinking and inventive skills, information literacy and life-skills are necessary to help our students meet the challenges of the future. Our students, when they go out into higher education or into the work force, must be people who are sought after because they are skillful and relevant.

With globalisation, our students will be expected to connect, work and live with the rest of the world, yet stay connected to Singapore. We need to give them the skills to learn and work beyond the boundaries of school and yet feel rooted to the family, school and nation, for this is where they really belong.
As global citizens, our students must take the lead to influence actions that will bring about positive change. They must be activists and ambassadors of environmental (physical and social) improvement for the good of humanity. Our students must be recognised as world-ready, yet having a sense of belonging as responsible sons/daughters, and active citizens of Singapore and the world.

As an institute, we want to establish MI as an institute of distinction. In our journey so far, we have achieved some measures of success, such as in the areas of physical fitness, aesthetics, character development, and robotics. Going forward, we strengthen our resolve in our mission to help every student achieve success by nurturing their talents. In addition, we want MI to be a place where students with special talents are further groomed to achieve greater success. We envision that a day will come where walls in the MI campus will be filled with portraits of successful individuals who had begun their road to success through a process of self-discovery and growth in MI.

What we want is to have our students see MI as a place of opportunities for all - a place where students of all abilities are given the support and encouragement to explore multiple routes to achieve success. MI must be a place where our students are heard and where opinions count. MI must be a place for students to explore and express - where there are platforms and support for students to take initiatives to try, test and possibly fail without fear. MI must be a familial environment which is safe and supportive of students in their growth, learning and development. In short, MI must be a home away from home for students and alumni alike.
