Premised on the mission to “nurture talents to achieve success”, Millennia Institute’s vision of building a forward-looking community of passionate learners, reflective thinkers, confident leaders and cultured individuals is aligned to developing students with sound character of Integrity, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. This is defined as students “doing it right”, i.e. possessing the moral character of Integrity and Respect; as well as “doing it well”, i.e. possessing the performance character of Resilience and Responsibility. In realizing this vision, a values-based approach is adopted by integrating the Institute’s twin outcomes of developing academic/career-related competencies and personal/civic virtues, for success in school, work and beyond.
Aligned to the social and emotional competencies to be developed in our students, all relevant programmes focus on creating Awareness [engaging the head], shaping Attitude [touching the heart] and engendering Action [moving the hands].
Character development in MI is premised on the concept of teaching good habits, inculcating core values, crafting character through win-win discipline and providing platforms for students to practice them in both the formal and informal curriculum. A customized package of life skills lessons and activities are carried out across all three levels.
The PU1 students’ emotional and social intelligence is further enhanced through fun and experiential learning activities in the 2-day SEL Camp. In the camp, the students learnt to manage resources via a Financial Literacy module, to manage Relationships via ‘Love Connection’ workshop and to carry themselves well via a session on Personal Grooming.
The PU2 Team Building Day seeks to help build team spirit among the students to enable them to work well together in groups for Project Work.
The PU3 seminar seek to motivate students to maintain their focus and momentum on revision and worked even harder to peak performance at GCE A Exam. At the Graduation and Appreciation Tea, while appreciation of PU3 students’ contribution will be expressed, they will also be given opportunity to show their appreciation to the Institute and to their parents.
Career Guidance in MI is an engaging programme that helps students bridge the gap between their current status and their identified end(s) which could take the form of a career option or a course option beyond the A level examination. This aims to heighten students’ sense of motivation and to help them find meaning in their time in MI as part of their continuing journey in realizing their aspirations.
Beginning with the end in mind, the PU 1 students are guided into reflecting their aspirations which is then translated into a personal roadmap that summarises their personal work values, interests and preferences and their aspirations. Students were also provided with supplementary sessions which include the subject combination talks and sample lectures of various subjects to help them decide on the most appropriate subject combination suited for them..
To supplement our students with more information for career planning, invitations to various industries are made and several practitioners are invited to share on various professions like accounting, social services and engineering among others. In addition, job attachments to various firms and organizations are also arranged for students. These students go through a screening process by teachers and for some students, possibly an interview by the respective organisations.
In PU 3, in addition to career talks and exhibitions held at the Institute, admission officers from the local universities are invited to give our students a glimpse of what these institutions can offer and the latest entry requirements. The Learning In Context Programme gave all PU 3 students the opportunity to go on a one-day job shadowing in a local university to experience a day in the life of a university student.
The Institute’s culture embodies both promoting ethics and excellence at work. Founded on caring relationships built between staff and students, MI strives to create a positive environment of mutual respect and common ground for growth and personal development. Key personnel in Millennia Institute model through leading by example. They are mentors to students just like all other teachers, in helping students embrace the institute values and work towards success.
Calling upon the `whole village’ to raise the child, parents, alumni, together with Institute Advisory Committee, ex-staff, foundations, community/industrial partners and school vendors are collectively engaged to help in the process of imparting the institute values to students. Ultimately, Millennia Institute strives to put in place necessary the systems/structures, to gradually, but surely, build-up an ethos and culture of sustaining improvement to achieve a break-through in moulding sound character and for realising the things that last.
