The 6th National Education (NE) Council was sworn in during the Student Leaders’ Investiture on 15 April 2009, ready to serve the school and heighten Millennians’ awareness of National Education.
Four core NE events were planned and implemented by the NE Council to remind Millennians about Singapore’s past history, present challenges and future opportunities. Total Defence Day was celebrated by getting the school to participate in activities that highlighted each pillar of Total Defence , catering to the different learning styles of Millennians. For the first time, Millennians were able to choose the activities that they wished to participate in. This year’s International Friendship Day was a collaboration between the Council and the Mathematics department. The Pre-U 1 students listened to the seniors relate their experiences in the MI.World, the Pre-U 2 students learnt about the internationalisation of mathematical games such as the Game of Nim, while our Vice-Principal Mrs. Mary Seah shared with the Pre-U 3 students about her experiences with the Singapore delegation to the United Nations.
Racial Harmony Week saw the NE Council collaborating with the Institute’s Indian, Malay and Modern Dance Clubs to choreograph and teach fellow Millennians our very own CIMO (Chinese-Indian-Malay-Others) Dance, a multiracial dance that combined dance styles from the different races. This year’s National Day was commemorated along with the annual Be Yourself Day and Institute Day. On this momentous occasion, Millennians celebrated the birthday of our nation as well as the success and achievements of fellow Millennians who have worked hard towards their goals. Although the H1N1 outbreak accelerated the need for a decentralised approach, the NE Council, with the support of the Sports Council and a group of very enthusiastic deejays, created a lively atmosphere through the sing-a-long sessions and a special radio-style programme “Don’t Forget the Lyrics”.
One of the most rewarding leadership experiences in the NE Council was the organisation of a local Amazing Race for a group of Japanese students from Kumamoto High School. The Amazing Race featured visits to some of Singapore’s historical sites to allow the Japanese visitors to experience the cultural vibrancy of Singapore. The PU1 student leader nominees demonstrated their leadership skills, teamwork and warmth as they led the Japanese guests around Singapore. Although it was a tiring day for everyone, the NE Council, Student Leader Nominees and the Japanese visitors enjoyed the event, which ended on a high note.
