The 6th Students’ Council was sworn into office on 15 April 2009. Councillors were selected based on a series of assessments on their abilities to lead as well as their level of commitment. The students had to be nominated by their home tutors, screened by the Student Affairs Committee, and were assessed based on feedback  from other teachers.

The Student Councillors were heavily involved in various Institute and external activities in 2009, starting with the Joint Admissions Exercise Orientation in February 2009. This year’s Orientation theme was ‘Impero’ (nb: useful to elaborate on significance of name for theme, why this name?). Each activity conducted during the orientation revolved around the Institute’s four core values of Integrity, Resilience, Respect and Responsibility.

Another notable event that was organised by the Student Council was the Teachers’ Day celebrations. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Super Heroes’, in a bid to recognise both teaching and non-teaching MI staff in helping students realise their potential and guiding them towards promising paths. Students put up an excellent performance to show their appreciation and gratitude to their teachers.

Besides organising Institute-wide events, the Student Councillors were instrumental in helping the Institute in its publicity and outreach efforts. They served as the Institute’s ambassadors and ushers for numerous events, such as the Institute’s Official Opening and Meet-the-Parents sessions.
